Our Volunteers: A Special People
Since its inception in 1992, Dover Park Hospice continues to rely on the generous contributions and efforts of volunteers to fulfill its mission of providing care and comfort to patients and their families.
Our volunteers come from diverse backgrounds, possess myriad skills and are keen to offer their services in various ways. There are home-makers who come during the day to assist serving meals and feeding; working adults who come after work to chat with or massage patients and retired professionals who accompany patients on weekly outings to places of interest or for medical appointments
No matter which function they serve, our volunteers come with a genuine desire to help and make a difference to the patients’ lives. It is such unique quality in our volunteers that helped them win the highly prestigious President’s Social Service Award in 2002 and 2011. This award is a recognition for outstanding voluntary contributions towards the social service sector in Singapore.
We encourage volunteers to grow with us. A large number of our volunteers have been with us for many years. This is because we have been successful in carving out ‘volunteer development paths for those who desire it.
We teach new skills and ways of doing things. Volunteering at the Hospice opens up new perspectives in our volunteers’ lives.
Special care is also taken, through proper orientation and organised activities, to prepare students of Community Involvement Programmes for what is likely to be a life-changing experience for them.
A Special Volunteer Management System
A simple measure of the success of the volunteer management system is the fact that majority of volunteers are recommended by existing volunteers who have found the work at Dover Park Hospice very gratifying.
In 2001 and 2011, Dover Park Hospice was lauded with the National Volunteerism & Philanthropy Award for Best Volunteer Management System. The award recognizes best practices in the management of volunteers or donors (including fundraising practices) in non-profit organisations.
We require volunteers for the following activities:
- Befriending (Weekdays, during office hours)
- Crafts-Making and Sales of Crafts (Saturday Afternoons)
- Hairdressing (Tuesday Mornings only)
- Malay-Speaking Volunteers for Organizing Birthday Celebrations (Saturday Afternoons only)
- Massaging of Patients (Saturday Afternoons only)
- Pet-Assisted Therapy (for rabbits and dogs owners)
