Mirza grew up watching his mother, a primary care nurse who worked at a polyclinic for over 20 years, care for patients with tenderness and quiet strength. Those early experiences shaped his belief that nursing is more than a profession, it is a way to bring comfort and humanity to others.
At the start of his career, working part-time with a private nursing agency, Mirza explored different healthcare settings. But it was in palliative care that he discovered his true purpose. He witnessed the importance of holistic care that goes beyond the physical, and the emotional, psychosocial and spiritual support needed by patients and families. This conviction led him to join Dover Park Hospice as a full-time nurse in 2014, where he now leads the Home Care team.
Mirza recalls that the work can be demanding, especially when it involves difficult conversations with patients and their loved ones. Yet, Mirza sees meaning in being fully present, walking alongside families through some of their hardest days.
Beyond his clinical role, he treasures the camaraderie of his colleagues, whether sharing meals during long days or supporting one another through challenges. As a mentor, he encourages young nurses to keep an open mind, knowing clarity about one’s career path often takes time and experience.
Today, each patient’s story reaffirms why he chose this path: to care with dignity, compassion, and unwavering commitment, and to help others live fully, even in life’s most fragile moments.
